8.9 million PCs infected Windows worm

In Past five days a worm has infected more than 3,6 million Windows Computer. The worm, dubbed Conficker, Downadup, or Kido, spreads via a vulnerability that Microsoft patched in October 2008. Once on a machine it sets up an HTTP server and resets a machine's System Restore point to stop administrators deleting it.

“The number of Downadup infections are skyrocketing based on our calculations,” said F-Secure in its blog.

“From an estimated 2.4 million infected machines to over 8.9 million during the last four days. That's just amazing.”

The worm contains the usual Trojan package that allows the controller to download new files from their own server. But in an unusual twist the malware generates hundreds of seemingly random domain names to scan for updates, making it much harder to track the one used by the malware writer.

“Our advice is to block all incoming and outgoing traffic on port 445 from those computers to ensure that
(a) they aren’t hit with exploits from the internet and (b) if they somehow are exploited, they aren’t able to infect the rest of the network via file shares,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

“Furthermore, if you have a group policy in place to lock out accounts after too many unsuccessful login attempts, the worm will probably cause many of these accounts to become locked out during the worm’s password cracking attempts. This can obviously be annoying, but at the same time it is a good indicator that you may have an infected computer on the network.”

Servers in the US and Europe have had fewest infections due to regular updating by IT administrators. China, Brazil and Russia have been hit hardest according to F-Secure.

Dell has unveiled plans to sell its Inspiron Mini 9 netbook model for $99 (£67) as part of a package with US telco AT &T.

Users will be required to sign a two-year contract for AT&T's LaptopConnect wireless broadband service. Normally sold for $449 (£305), the package will be offered at a $350 (£238) mail-in rebate.

The two companies plan to offer the discount to US customers until the end of January. Both sides hope that the deal will spur consumer interest in the market for netbooks.

"The Mini 9 is designed specifically for mobile hi-def lifestyles that require fast and reliable access to email, social networking and internet surfing, and this offer adds exceptional value to the equation," said Dell global consumer sales and marketing vice president Michael Tatelman.

While bundling discounted netbooks with service contracts is still uncommon, the practice is standard among mobile phone retailers and service providers.

The deal will be the first for Dell, but not for AT&T. Last month, the company offered a promotion with electronics retailer Radio Shack which bundled $99 (£67) Acer netbooks with a service contract.

Microsoftissued its first patch for the just-released Windows 7 beta on Tuesday, but it passed on plugging a hole in an important file-sharing protocol that it fixed in older versions of the operating system.

Earlier on January 13, 2009, Windows Update, Microsoft's primary update service, began delivering the first patch to Windows 7 since the company struggled to launch the public beta last Friday. The update fixes a flaw that shaves several seconds of audio from any MP3 file that's edited, including files modified automatically as users connect to the Internet.

"Without action on your part, all MP3 files that have large headers in your Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center libraries are likely to lose some audio," Microsoft said in the support document it published Saturday, several days after it first posted the fix to its MSND and TechNet subscription services.

Before Tuesday, users who wanted to apply the fix had to find it, download it manually and install it themselves.

Microsoft also recommended that users back up all MP3 files before doing an upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista, and that they set all of them to "read-only" status by right-clicking each file in Windows Explorer and then clicking the General tab and selecting the "Read-only" box. Failing that, users should disable metadata automatic updates in Windows Media Player, Microsoft said.

At the same time, it quashed the MP3 bug, however, Microsoft ignored a vulnerability in the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol that affects every version of Windows, including Windows 7.

Microsoft explained why the flaw went unfixed. "We provide security updates for beta versions of Windows through Windows Update for Critical issues only," said Christopher Budd, a spokesman for the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), in a post to the group's blog Tuesday. "So the vulnerability will be addressed in the next public release for Windows 7."

Of the three bugs patched by the MS09-001 security update today, just one is pertinent to Windows 7, Budd added. That vulnerability, designated as CVE-2008-4114, is a denial-of-service bug rated "moderate," the second step in Microsoft's four-level scoring system.

The remaining two vulnerabilities -- both labeled "critical" by Microsoft -- affect Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003; one of them also affects Windows Vista and Server 2008.

Windows 7 beta, which was released Saturday, will be available for download through at least Jan. 24.

The FBI has called for greater international coordination in anti-hacking laws at the first International Conference on Cyber Security.

The conference was held last week at Fordham University in New York City and was co-sponsored by the FBI. It aimed to bring together commercial companies, law enforcement and private individuals with an interest in curbing online crime.

“The FBI’s goal of sponsoring this conference is to build and forge long-lasting relationships to combat terrorist and criminal use of the Internet,” said Joseph Demarest, head of the FBI’s New York Office.

“The conference is the beginning of greater cooperation on all cyber matters.”

As an example of how such cooperation would work the FBI highlighted the work of the new 24/7 computer intrusion investigation team, which now has 55 member states contributing resources.

The FBI showed an example of how the team responds to attacks, in this example involving an initial intrusion into a bank in Mexico City initially routed through a computer in New York. This was however controlled from a computer in South Korea which was in turn traced to a machine in Thailand, where local police made an arrest.

Thanks to inter-network cooperation the team could backtrace and make an arrest within hours, rather than the weeks and months that traditional online policing would have taken.

“The bottom line is to make sure there are consequences for criminal cyber actions and similar consequences everywhere,” explained Christopher Painter, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division.

A researcher has uncovered a flaw that could allow hackers to steal information from those using Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard, or Safari for the PC.

The flaw was found by open source software developer Brian Mastenbrook. It occurs when the Safari browser interacts with RSS feeds and makes the personal information of the user vulnerable.

"Safari is vulnerable to an attack that allows a malicious web site to read files on a user's hard drive without user intervention," Mastenbrook wrote on his blog.

"This can be used to gain access to sensitive information stored on the user's computer, such as emails, passwords or cookies, that could be used to gain access to the user's accounts on some web sites."

While Mastenbrook understandably does not go into detail, he said that people using OS X 10.5 are vulnerable no matter what browser they are using, and that PC users are at risk if using the Safari browser.

Mastenbrook has published a suggested workaround for Apple users but advises PC users of Safari to change browser for the moment.

The researcher is regarded as a reliable source who has in the past found other flaws with Apple's software.

"Google works hard to protect our users from malware. Using Project Hosting on Google Code, or any Google product, to serve or host malware is a violation of our product policies," the spokesman said in a statement. "Using automated tools, we actively work to detect and remove sites that serve malware from our network. We have removed many of these projects from Google Code and from our search results. Additionally, we'll continue to explore new ways to identify and eliminate such content."

The problem is similar to one that was found to be plaguing Microsoft's MSN Spaces site a year ago and continues to occur there, according to a McAfee Avert Labs blog posting.

AMD is working with leading software and content developer OTOY to develop and deploy applications, high-definition (HD) content and even games in the cloud using a massively-parallel supercomputer.

Details of the AMD Fusion Render Cloud were unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during a keynote by AMD president and chief executive Dirk Meyer, along with OTOY chief executive Jules Urbach and spokespeople from Lucasfilm, Dell, HP and Electronic Arts.

"AMD has a long track record in the supercomputing world. Seven out of 10 of the world's fastest machines, including the fastest two computers on the planet, are powered by AMD hardware," said Meyer.

"Today, AMD is pleased to announce a new kind of supercomputer unlike any other ever built. It is being designed to break the one petaflop barrier, and to process a million compute threads across more than 1,000 graphics processors."

Meyer claimed that the AMD Fusion Render Cloud will be the fastest graphics supercomputer ever built, and will be ready in the latter half of 2009.

"It will be powered by OTOY's software for a singular purpose: to make HD cloud computing a reality," he added.

The system aims to use server-side rendering to allow content providers to deliver PC applications, video games and other graphics-intensive applications to virtually any type of mobile device with a web browser, without killing battery life and alleviating the need for powerful client-side processors.

Once rendered and stored in this cloud environment, the data can be compressed and streamed in real time over a wireless or broadband connection to devices such as smartphones, set-top boxes and ultra-thin notebooks.

"By fusing industry leading CPU technology with computationally dense, massively parallel graphics processors, the AMD Fusion Render Cloud can rival the world's most powerful industrial computing devices, but requires just a fraction of the floor space, power envelope and cost associated with many of today's leading supercomputers," said Urbach.

The AMD Fusion Render Cloud will be powered by AMD-optimised hardware including the newly announced AMD Phenom II processors, AMD 790 chipsets and ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics processors, while OTOY will provide technical software development and a middleware layer.

"The AMD Fusion Render Cloud will allow directors like Robert Rodriguez of Troublemaker Studios to break through existing CPU-only and graphics processor-only render bottlenecks which have imposed limitations on the creation of true HD assets," said Charlie Boswell, director of digital media and entertainment at AMD.
